Which SMP Treatment May Suit You?
Scalp micropigmentation is not a one-size-fits-all treatment. Suitability depends on your current hair coverage, hair-loss pattern, preferred hairstyle, previous hair transplant treatment and the result you want to achieve.
Shaven Effect SMP
Designed to recreate the appearance of closely shaved natural hair follicles. It may be suitable for men with significant recession, thinning or advanced hair loss who are comfortable wearing their hair very short.
Male Density Effect
Density Effect SMP is performed between existing longer hair to reduce the contrast between the scalp and surrounding hair. The amount of natural hair remaining is an important part of determining suitability. No need to shave your hair to do our Male Density Effect – keeping your hair long for the procedure is perfectly fine.
Female Density Effect
Female Density Effect can reduce visible scalp through areas of diffuse thinning, including the part line and crown, while allowing the natural hair to remain long.
Am I a Good Candidate for Scalp Micropigmentation?
Many people experiencing male or female hair loss may be suitable for scalp micropigmentation, but the technique used should be matched to the person’s existing hair and intended hairstyle.
Important factors include your remaining hair coverage, pattern of hair loss, scalp condition, previous hair transplant procedures and whether the goal is to recreate a shaved appearance or reduce visible scalp beneath longer hair.
Shaven Effect vs Density Effect SMP
Shaven Effect
Shaven Effect scalp micropigmentation creates the appearance of natural hair follicles on a closely shaved scalp. It can help recreate the visual appearance of a hairline and reduce contrast across areas of hair loss. Hair can be shaved with a blade, skull shaver or other rotary shaver, or very short beard trimmers or detailer shaver.
Density Effect
Density Effect scalp micropigmentation is performed underneath existing hair. Pigment impressions reduce the colour contrast between the scalp and surrounding hair, making areas of thinning appear visually fuller. The idea is to create a ‘shaven effect’ under your long hair so you can shave in future if you choose to.
Who Is Suitable for Density Effect SMP?
Density Effect relies on sufficient natural hair remaining throughout the treatment area. It may be suitable for both men and women where there is existing hair coverage but the scalp has become more visible through thinning.
Where hair loss has progressed significantly and natural coverage is limited, a Shaven Effect may be a more appropriate option. Borderline cases should be assessed individually.
Can I Have SMP After a Hair Transplant?
Scalp micropigmentation can be used to visually enhance the appearance of density following hair transplantation where sufficient transplanted or existing hair remains.
The transplant result, remaining hair coverage, timing and treatment area all need to be considered before choosing the most appropriate SMP approach.
