Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a non-surgical cosmetic tattoo that replicates the appearance of real hair follicles to create the look of density, a refined hairline, or a clean shaved style. At SMP Australia, we use a layered approach and customised pigment selection to deliver realistic, long-lasting results.
Start with a free, no-obligation consultation in Adelaide, Sydney or Brisbane — then follow our proven four-step process.
What to Expect From Your Free Consultation
Your consultation is completely free of charge and designed to give you clarity. We’ll assess suitability, discuss your goals, and plan the most natural approach for your scalp, skin tone, and lifestyle.
We’ll cover:
- Health background & suitability (skin conditions, healing factors, medications, sensitivity)
- Hair loss pattern and your desired style (shaved look vs density treatment)
- Hair surgical background (FUE/FUT history, transplant density, scar camouflage planning)
- Colour selection based on your skin tone and undertone (to avoid “too dark” results)
- Hairline design (age-appropriate shape, symmetry, soft gradients)
- Session plan, aftercare, healing expectations, and long-term maintenance
Pressure-free, educational, and tailored to you.
What we’ll create:
- A clear treatment recommendation (and honest advice if SMP isn’t right)
- A proposed hairline / density design direction
- A session schedule (most clients complete SMP over 3 sessions)
- Aftercare guidance and realistic expectations
- We provide a full treatment plan after your consultation for you to keep and refer back to as sometimes the consultations are quite detailed and long.
Quick note: SMP is a layered process. We intentionally build density gradually for the most natural finish and best longevity.
Who SMP Is For
SMP can be an excellent option for men and women experiencing:
- Receding hairline or temple recession
- Diffuse thinning across the top
- Crown thinning
- Post-transplant density enhancement (FUE/FUT)
- Scar camouflage (strip scars, trauma scars)
- Alopecia (depending on skin suitability)

2. Design The Result
We work with you to design an age-appropriate hairline (or density plan) that suits your face shape and goals. We focus on soft gradients and realistic follicle patterning — not harsh edges — for a natural look up close.
- Hairline mapping and style options
- Density planning for thinning zones
- Custom pigment selection for your skin tone
3. Treatment (3 Sessions)
Most clients complete SMP across three sessions, typically spaced 7 days apart. Each session builds on the last to create depth, density, and realism. Each session we continue to check in with you about the design, we want you to feel you have full control of how your result will turn out.
- Session 1: Foundation layer and initial pattern
- Session 2: We build density
- Session 3: Final density, softening of hairlines becomes apparent and any final adjustments
You’ll receive clear aftercare instructions and products to support healing and pigment retention.
4. Enjoy Your SMP (And Keep It Looking Great!)
Once healed, your result will look realistic, natural, and low-maintenance. SMP typically lasts for years, and a light refresh can be done if/when you want to boost the look.
- Tips to minimise fading (especially in the Australian sun)
- Anti-shine recomendations for those who have a shiny scalp
- Long-term maintenance recommendations
Scalp Micropigmentation FAQs
Yes. Your consultation is completely complimentary and no-obligation. It’s an educational session to assess suitability and design the right approach for you.
Most clients achieve their result in three sessions. Occasionally, a small additional refinement may be recommended depending on skin type, previous work, or goals.
Sessions are typically spaced 7 days apart. This spacing supports healing and allows us to build density gradually for a natural finish.
Most clients describe SMP as mild discomfort rather than pain. Sensitivity varies by person and area, but it is generally well tolerated. During your consultation we will cover our stratergies that help to keep our clients comfortable during your session. We will go through pain relief options to make your sessions more comfortable if needed.
SMP can last for years! Over time, gradual fading is normal, and a refresh may be recommended if you want to maintain peak sharpness and density. This ususally is between year 3-5. If your skin in particularly oily, you are using any medication or doing any further treatments to stimulate circulation such as skin needling on the scalp, these can possibly increase the rate that the SMP fades.
Yes. SMP is commonly used to improve the look of density after a transplant and can also help camouflage FUT and FUE scars. We recomend to wait 6 months for scarring to allow the skin to remodel and scarring to mature, and from 9 months to the recipient area.
We select pigments based on your skin tone and undertone (not simply your hair colour). This approach helps keep the result natural-looking as true to colour over time. We dont get blue or green results that you may read about online because we are highly exoperienced in working with carbon pigments.
It’s normal for the treatment to appear slightly darker at first. As the scalp heals, the impression softens and settles into a more natural tone. Redness from sessions is different for everyone, the lighter the skin tone usually the more redness that appears immmeatly during the session. This settles within 48 hours – but most redness drops in the first 12 hours.
We offer free consultations in Adelaide, Sydney, and Brisbane. Book here.
